10 fun facts about video game characters

Did you know that Nintendo originally intended Link to travel into a futuristic techno-Hyrule? Here is a collection of facts that you may not know about your favourite characters.

 

packmanPac-Man

Designer Toru Iwatani invented Pac-man while he was eating pizza. “Puck-puck” means munching in Japan, so that’s where the caracter got the name Puc-Man. He was however renamed Pac-Man when the game was released in the United States, since that makes much more sense…

It’s common knowledge that the original name for Mario was Jumpman. However, in the original arcade version of Donkey Kong Mario was not a plumber but a carpenter. Furthermore, the girl he was going to save, though commonly known as Paulene, was just called Lady.

The original Japanese name for the character is Rockman. Since “rock” was slang for crack cocaine in the United States, the name had to change.

Lara’s chest size was originally meant to be much smaller, but the designer increased it by 150% of the intended size by accident. After the mistake was discovered, the other designers persuaded him to keep the chest the way it was.

The designers intended the original The Legend of Zelda to have a much more intricate story where the player would travel between present-day Hyrule and a technological future Hyrule. Link got his name because he was supposed to be the link between the past and the future.

Before becoming the protagonist of a successful RPG, Geralt was played by actor Michal Zebrowski in a Polish movie and TV series adaptation of Andrzej Sapkowski’s short stories, internationally known as The Hexer. Never heard of them? Well, there is a reason for that.

In the browser based MMORPG The Kingdom of Loathing Cloud appears as an enemy called the Protagonist. Defeating him will reward you the Ridiculously Huge Sword and Super-Spiky Hair Gel.

During the development of the first Monkey Island game the hero of the story was only called “Guy”. The final name came from a file naming convention used by graphical artist Steve Purcell when creating the character animations. For many of the file names he used the suffix “Brush”, thus “GuyBrush”. Designer Ron Gilbert took a liking to it and decided to name his main character Guybrush.

The SEGA mascot was originally supposed to have an attractive human girlfriend in a red dress named Madonna. Naoto Ohshima created a backstory where Sonic was cast as a rockstar in a band with party animals, and Madonna was a groupie.

This mighty dragon from The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is voiced by Charles Martinet, the same guy who voices Super Mario.

    I do not know whether it’s just me or iff perhaps everybody
    else experiencing problems with your site. It appears as if some of the written text
    on your content are running off the screen.
